Just a short update on the proposed introduction of ID Cards for airside workers. As you will know, Prospect has been working hard to oppose the introduction of these arrangements and has written to all MPs asking that they oppose the secondary legislation which would underpin these proposals.
The cards are to be “trialed” at London City and Manchester Airports later this for a period of 18 months. The outgoing Aviation Minister, Jim Fitzpatrick, has confirmed that as part of the trial “only new airside workers” will be required to apply for a new identity card. This is a shift in the Government position.
I have today written to the new incoming Home Secretary Alan Johnson setting out our concerns and seeking a fundamental rethink from Government on this issue.
The letter sent to all MPs can be downloaded HERE.
Best wishes,
Garry
